Making Stuff: Footpeg Coat Hook
Since I’m finally at the point where I can cut, weld, and grind metal… when I was inspired to make a coat hook this weekend, I did so. I can’t even describe how excited I am to finally be able to do some of the weird decor and art projects I’ve had on my mind for years. My welding isn’t perfect, but it’s getting better with every go.
Anywho, on Saturday I made a coat/helmet/whatever-you-want-it-to-be-for hook out of an old foot peg… it even flips up.
Here’s the [rather short] process.
Starting with an old Yamaha XS650 footpeg which flips up and such.
Removed the rubber with a razorblade, being sure to keep a clean cut for later.
Welded the rear plate in the middle of the metal foot peg, then ground it down and buffed it out a little. I took a round piece of steel that Wolfy had laying around the shop and used the drill press to make mounting holes for hanging. The center hole was already there, but I marked out where the peg would be mounted against the plate so the lower screw would go through the actual peg base itself.
I made sure to keep the pieces of the project all somewhat unfinished and left some of the petina as best I could. I removed the cotter pin from the peg mount and welded it to the wall mount. One side definitely went more smoothly than the other, and I ground it out a little bit… removing some of the coloration I was trying to keep intact.
So I torched the crap out of them, and then wire brushed them a bit. I also had to round the top edge of the peg mount so the shortened rubber piece wouldn’t get ripped on the corner when you flip it up… and voila!
Perfect to hang shop jackets, motorcycle jackets, and even helmets. If you want one, email me! alicia [at] themotolady.com <- I do this because of the robotspammers.
