Upon one of visits to Icon’s HQ in Portland, I saw a very cool Airframe Construct with impact statistics labeled on different areas of the helmet. Today, the Icon Airframe Statistic helmet is available to anyone who wants to express (without words) why they choose to wear a full face. Honestly, I’d just love to have one on display in the shop. It’s a good reminder. Almost 35% of hits are taken straight to the jaw. Here’s the first version/proto Airframe Construct helmet from years back. Amazing to know the top of… Continue Reading »

Suzuki Recursion Concept: Classic Modern in Full Effect
This summer BMW released their Concept Ninety, a retro modern motorcycle roughly based on the 40 year old R90 design. This month, Suzuki followed up with a retro modern styled sport bike called the Recursion Concept. The bike has beautiful classic lines with modern angles, a 588cc water-cooled two-cylinder engine… and turbo. The idea behind the small displacement engine equipped with an inter-cooled turbocharge system is to offer a lighter weight motorbike with all the power of a bigger, heavier liter-bike. Partially faired, it’s a more modern take on the sport classic… Continue Reading »

Ueda Helmet Sculptures
Shuhei Ueda, located in Japan, is doing some very interesting things in the way of helmet art under the name Ueda Helmets including iconic race replicas. Instead of painting helmets that are already manufactured, he’s sculpting helmets with human features in/on them. Shuhei was born in 1980 in Hiroshima, Japan. He aquired his M.F.A. at Osaka University of Arts in 2005. Below he is modeling his Kenny Roberts themed helmet. Below we have the Suzuka ‘91 display from the Japanese 500cc WGP race including sort-of-replicas of first place rider Kevin Schwantz’s helmet, second… Continue Reading »
1969 Triumph/BSA Chopper: Electric Alice
When Daniel said “I’m going to ride this thing out of here tonight or tomorrow” I couldn’t help but feel pessimistic due to my own failures during my Monster build. But later that night he was yelling, “DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OIL!?” He worked quietly and swiftly to complete it by that night. When it was all reassembled he had to lay down the wrench for the evening and go home. All the parts stores were closed- I know that feeling. The next day he explained the History of Electric Alice to… Continue Reading »
The Woman Behind the Women’s Moto Exhibit
My friends, I have featured Lanakila MacNaughton’s photography from her project the Women’s Moto Exhibit many many times, but this time you get to see the woman behind the lens. This look behind the scenes literally gave me goosebumps- Austin Will perfectly captured the essence of art, artist, and subjects. I got chills and they’re multiplyin’! “I’m shooting medium format… film on Hassleblad. I’m manually focusing on a moving at 40 or 50 miles an hour.” For those of you who haven’t fiddled with this style photography (or even much at all… Continue Reading »
Artist: Allison Rose Lear
Delaware based Allison Rose Lear is a motorcyclist, artist, and more. (Photograph by Lanakila MacNaughton of the Women’s Moto Exhibit.) Her art is timeless, detailed, and striking. She recently showed some very large pieces at the LOADED show in Delaware, put on by Cafe Racer XXX and Loaded Gun Customs at the Terraplane art gallery. Allison told me that most of her art is done on large wooden panels with acrylic paint, accompanied by a simple wooden frame. Showcasing her passion for cafe racers and simple but classic art… she brings a… Continue Reading »
